📜 History of Advent Begins

In the fifth century, the Advent calendar was just a simple calendar with doors that each had an image or a Bible verse behind them. In the nineteenth century, chocolate, cheese, alcohol, or make-up were added to the calendar.

The practice of counting the days till Christmas started in the mid-nineteenth century, when German Lutheran households used chalk to mark each day until Christmas Eve. Gerhard Lang, a German printer, began producing Advent calendars out of cardboard in the early 1900s. By the 1920s, these cardboard Advent calendars began to include little cut-out doors with a devotional image or Bible text hidden behind them. During World War II, as Germany began rationing cardboard, manufacture of the calendars declined, and in the 1930s, Lang totally ceased production of Advent calendars.

Nazi Germany used the Advent calendar to instill allegiance in youngsters in order to enforce the state’s ideology on the younger generations. In 1943, the Third Reich made its own Advent calendar. It had pictures of tanks, swastikas, and Nazi symbols.

When the war ended, a few companies resumed production of Advent calendars because cardboard was in short supply. Richard Sellmer of Stuttgart, whose firm still exists today, was a popular maker. His calendars were transported to the United States in the 1950s and became a part of the American Christmas custom.

In 1953, “Newsweek” published an image of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s grandkids holding an Advent calendar. Many people believe the image is what elevated the calendar’s appeal in the United States. Cadbury entered the race for this specific sort of Advent calendar in 1971, after the first chocolate Advent calendar was released in 1958. Since then, many companies have made and sold Advent calendars with different things, making them more appealing to adults as well as children.
