📜 History of American Diabetes Alert Day

In the 18th and 19th centuries, physicians began to recognize that dietary changes could help with diabetes management.In 1916, Elliott Joslin wrote “The Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus,” proposing a fasting diet and regular exercise to reduce blood sugar levels. Frederick Banting, a Canadian doctor, was the first person to think about using insulin to treat diabetes. This was in 1920.

Insulin is being used to treat type 1 diabetes. Other medical advances have enabled patients to check their blood sugar levels at home and accurately regulate them through the use of insulin, medicine, exercise, and food. Diabetes now affects around 34.2 million Americans, with 7.2 million people unaware that they have the disease. To make matters worse, around 88 million individuals have prediabetes, a disease marked by elevated blood sugar levels but not high enough to be classified as diabetes.

In 1988, the American Diabetes Alert Day was created to teach people about diabetes and how dangerous it can be.
