📜 History of Bed-in for Peace Day
Many citizens in the United States were opposed to the United States’ engagement in the Vietnam War. Many celebrities took part in the demonstration. Muhammad Ali was the heavyweight champion, but he refused to join the army and was stripped of his title and boxing license.
Former Beatles member John Lennon, along with his wife Yoko, attended the protest in 1969. During their honeymoon, the couple booked the presidential suite at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel and invited the journalists into their bedroom. The pair talked about peace and handed out peace signs. This style of protest became known as the “bed-in protest. It was also hugely popular in pop culture. Bed-in posters were released by musicians and bands such as Linkin Park and Green Day. Posters with slogans like “Make Love, Not War” were popular.
