Only three months after Emperor Hirohito’s death, Akihito began making declarations of contrition to numerous Asian countries, beginning with China, for the pain they endured during the Japanese occupation. He also attempted to bring the royal family closer to the people of Japan.

On July 13, 2016, it was revealed that Akihito intended to quit the throne. This was a huge step forward for the Japanese imperial dynasty, considering the previous time an abdication occurred was in 1817. On June 8, 2017, a one-time law was passed that made it possible for Akihito to step down. On April 30, 2019, the throne was given to Akihito’s oldest son, who is now Emperor Naruhito.
