📜 History of Bock Beer Day
The Saxony area, on the eastern edge of central Germany, is where the Bock beer type originated. The territory borders Poland and the Czech Republic. The bock beer was initially manufactured and offered as a malty, mildly hopped ale in a dark hue by German brewers in Hanseatic, a tiny town near Einbeck, during the 1400s. Later in the 1700s, brewers in other regions of Germany, such as Munich, adopted the Einbeck style, which they termed “Ein bock,” and this became the beer’s formal appellation as “bock beer.”
Initially, pale brown bock beers were brewed using top-fermenting yeast known as ale yeast. However, since the discovery of lager yeast in the 1500s, bock beers have been made by bottom fermentation with lager yeast. It is the source of its distinctive dark brown hue. Modern bock beers can range in color from pale copper to brown.
Bock beer was reserved for religious holidays such as Easter, Christmas, and Lent. It’s also because German monks used this thick, black drink as’ liquid bread ‘during Lent to stock up on carbohydrates and calories. You now understand why you feel so full after only one pitcher of bock beer.
