The removal of Bibles from schools began in 1962 and 1963, when the United States Supreme Court ruled that Bible readings in public schools were unconstitutional, and so withdrew Bibles from classrooms. But in 2014, Focus on the Family, an American Christian group that helps families and gives information to Christians, set up this day to encourage children to bring their bibles to school as a right to free speech and religion.

Since its start in 2014, this event has increased in popularity, with over 40,000 kids participating in previous years, representing every state in the country.

Bringing a Bible to school is protected under the First Amendment, and students can read it in their own time, such as over lunch, but not during a class or during a time for official school activities.
