KDKA in Pittsburgh launched the first commercial radio station on November 2, 1920, with a broadcast of the Harding-Cox presidential election results. The KDK broadcast and the musical programs that followed were a huge success, inspiring others to set up similar stations. By the end of 1921, there were eight stations in operation in the United States.

In 1921 and 1922, the sale of radio receiving sets and component components necessary for home building of sets increased, which was followed by a significant growth in the number of transmitting stations. By November 1, 1922, 564 radio stations had been licensed. In 1927, Congress passed the Radio Act. This law set up the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which gives broadcasters wavelengths.
