📜 History of Brutus Day
Brutus came from a long line of Roman leaders who rose to the pinnacle of their political careers during Caesar’s reign. All of these combined to make Brutus the ideal individual to assure the conspiracy’s success. Longinus persuaded Brutus to join his cause through public shame and the influence of intimate companions. Brutus later enlisted the help of his cousin, Caesar’s close ally, Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus. The three men began aggressively attracting individuals of renown—senators—to the plot in February 44 B.C. They are: Gaius Trebonius, Publius Casca, and Servius Sulpicius Galba. After many meetings and talks, the plotters have decided to kill Caesar during a senate meeting on the Ides of March.
Plutarch claims that Caesar ignored multiple warnings about his impending death in the Senate on the Ides of March, including one from Spurinna, a soothsayer. When Caesar had misgivings at the last minute, the conspirators dispatched Albinus to convince him that everything was OK and that he would lose face if he did not appear at the Senate House. That swayed Caesar’s decision, and Albinus poisoned his good buddy. This was the first major act of treachery on Brutus Day. After settling in the Senate, the conspirators approached Caesar and started to stab him with blades hidden in their togas. Caesar attempted to defend himself at first, but gave up when he noticed his buddy, Brutus. That was Brutus Day’s tremendous act of betrayal.
