📜 History of Carnival Monday
Soon, regions were conquered by people from various origins, and new people began to participate in the Carnival ritual. In fact, the celebration was held even after the British took authority. In 1494, new rituals, such as donning a mask during the ceremony, were instituted in Rome. This, too, was a ritual that originated in Africa.
After slavery was abolished, these festivities expanded. In reality, the Africans exploited the celebration to showcase their culture and traditions. This enraged the conquerors, who were hell-bent on erasing slaves’ identities. A restriction on slaves enjoying the Carnival was imposed in the 17th century, which caused unrest. Slaves revolted in 1899 and celebrated the event despite the prohibition.
Today, the event is a national holiday that draws thousands of people home, even if they have moved to other nations. Carnival Monday is celebrated every year with enormous parades, music, and lavish decorations.
