📜 History of Casual Pi Day
Later, around the middle of the fourth century, Zu Chongzhi, another gifted mathematician, computed pi once again by performing time-consuming calculations. As a result of the theft and lack of availability of Archimedes’ writings in China at the time, Chongzhi created his method for calculating pi. The original discoverers of pi in its genuine sense were Chongzhi and Archimedes.
Later, mathematicians used circumscribed and inscribed polygons to try to increase the precision of pi. This was the method used by Archimedes to calculate pi for the first time, and it remained the standard method for pi computation for the next thousand years. Using this method, Austrian astronomer Christoph Grienberger came up with the most precise estimate of pi in 1630, reaching 38 precise digits.
Pi Day is observed worldwide on March 14 each year, and Pi Approximation Day is said to be intrinsically related to Pi Day. Pi = 3.14, therefore physicist Larry Shaw invented Pi Day at the “Exploratorium” in 1988. The “San Francisco Science Museum” reports that Pi Day has been scheduled for March 14 since that is when the number Pi occurs (3.14). Pi Day was also supported in 2009 by the “United States House of Representatives.” On the other side, July 22 is designated as Pi Approximation Day each year.
