📜 History of Clean Up Australia Day

When he returned, he began a deliberate attempt to clean up Australia. In 1989, he organized a community initiative called “Clean Up Sydney Harbour” with the help of his friends. It got a lot of support from the public. More than 40,000 people came and gave their time and energy to help the environment.

Clean Up Australia was founded the following year on the assumption that if people in Sydney could be motivated to action, so could the rest of Australia. In 1990, around 300,000 people participated in the first Clean Up Australia Day. People have volunteered to gather and remove rubbish from their communities for the past three decades. Clean Up Australia asked the United Nations Environment Programme for help in 1993 to turn their idea into a global movement. This led to the creation of Clean Up the World Day, which is celebrated by about 80 million people in 80 countries.
