📜 History of Coming of Age Day

In 1948, the holiday was granted official status in Japan and is now celebrated on January 15 every year. The date of Coming of Age Day was altered to the second Monday in January in 2000. Before 710, there was no age requirement for ceremonial qualification, with ages ranging from 10 to 25 qualifying. Males from the court aristocracy celebrated their coming of age in a ritual known as “kanre” i, also known as the “Cap Ceremony,” which marked the honors by allowing them to wear the adult cap – ‘kammuri.’

It’s a long day, beginning with a formal invitation from their local government to give a speech. The men either wear suits or traditional hakama pants, while the ladies spend hours playing dress-up, getting their hair done, and having ornate kimonos tailored. Following inspirational presentations, presents are distributed, photographs are taken, and parties are held.
