📜 History of Commitment Day

Marriage rites were first mentioned in ancient Mesopotamia about 2350 B.C. People did not marry for love until the 16th century. Religion had no role in marriage. Marriage was primarily used to form political or aristocratic alliances, as well as diplomatic and commercial links. Mutual consent did not exist, and married couples were bound by their parents’ wishes.

Brides had few to no rights in marriage in ancient Hebrew, Greek, and Roman societies, and were generally regarded as high-end assets. Men were obligated to adequately care for their wives and were permitted to take concubines. Women, on the other hand, were expected to care for the home and bear children.

As the church’s influence in society grew, it became necessary for a marriage to be legally binding. The Council of Trent determined in the 16th century that a marriage is only lawful if it is presided over by a priest and witnessed by two witnesses. In addition, the Council adopted a Catechism that defined marriage as “the conjugal union of a man and a woman, contracted between two qualified persons, which obliges them to live together throughout life.” Together, these things and the spread of Christianity helped the idea of being able to choose your own spouse grow, while old traditions like arranged marriage and the power of patriarchy fell.

With Lord Hardwicke’s introduction of the Marriage Act in 1753, formal marriage rituals were made mandatory in England and Wales. The marriage had to be performed by a priest in front of two witnesses, and there had to be a marriage registry.

Another Marriage Act was enacted in England, Wales, and Germany in 1836. This Act provides an alternative to religious marriage, resulting in an increase in civil marriage ceremonies. During this time, the English government also started keeping track of how many people were getting married across the country.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, love joined the marital institution. The French and American revolutions, as well as the blurring of economic borders, made this feasible. With the growth of industrialization, couples no longer had to rely on their parents for financial support; they relocated to cities to work. For economic reasons, women are no longer required to marry after they begin working. They might choose a spouse based on their feelings for each other and their readiness to commit to a lifetime partnership.

Things to do on Commitment Day

Commit to a healthier lifestyle
If you are a junk food junkie, drink too much coffee, sit in front of your computer all day, or engage in minimal physical activity, it is time to commit to a better lifestyle. You could start by joining a gym, changing your diet, or making a plan to jog at least three times a week.

Commit to a loved one
If you are in a relationship, you may spend more time with your spouse and give them the attention they deserve. Even if you are not in a relationship, you may make a commitment to spend more time with your parents by calling and visiting them more regularly. You may also commit to taking your relationship with a loved one to the next level by giving them a ring.

Commit to something you have always wanted to do
Perhaps you’ve always wanted to acquire a new language or talent, or start a new job, but you’ve always fallen short. Commitment Day is the ideal time to begin devoting yourself to that activity. You might start with “30 days of language learning” or “30 days of learning a new skill.” Post it on your social media account (ideally Twitter) and update it daily to hold yourself accountable.
