📜 History of Comoros National Day

The first Europeans to visit the islands were Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, but France is credited with establishing colonial power over Mayotte, the westernmost island. In 1841, a native ruler gave the island to the French. Too much fighting was going on among the islanders for them to put up much of a fight against the French. In 1886, European colonial powers determined that France would govern over the remaining islands in the Comoran archipelago.

After the Second World War, the Comoros became a French overseas territory. Internal autonomy was the focus later in 1961. The Comoros would be granted freedom in 1978, according to French officials. All but one of the four major islands supported independence, according to a referendum. Mayotte favored continuing to be ruled by France.

The Comorian parliament of the islands unilaterally declared their independence on July 6, 1975, electing Ahmed Abdallah as their first leader. That assertion was refuted by the French, and Mayotte became a part of France’s empire. Nevertheless, the Comoros people see this historic day as a day of liberation.
