📜 History of Culturama Day

The first tournament was held in 1974. After meeting with the Nevis Dramatic and Cultural Society (NEDACS) in February 1974, Culturama was born.
The absence of traditional dancing troupes in the 1974 Christmas event was lamented by NEDACS. They responded by establishing a new festival to commemorate and promote Nevisian culture. The festival was titled “Culturama,” and it was scheduled to take place on August Emancipation Weekend.
After a difficult period in the mid-1980s, Culturama has established itself as a significant event on the calendar. While visitors may find it difficult to distinguish Cultarama from other Caribbean carnivals, the festival strives to maintain its original goal of promoting indigenous culture and heritage through many of its events.
Every year, Nevisians celebrate their heritage at Culturama. It is Nevis’ reaction to the different carnivals that take place on other Caribbean islands. Every year in early August, it is held to commemorate Nevisians who have returned to feast with their friends and families. It is a commemoration and celebration of cultural practices. Every night, music, parties, food markets, and performances take place in preparation for the early march through downtown Charlestown.
Colorful pageants, dance, poetry, and folk music are also available. The day concludes with a march through crowded streets, watched by thousands of people from all around the world.
