πŸ“œ History of Cyprus Independence Day

The origins of Cyprus Independence Day may be traced back to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877. The series of battles mirrored the demise of the Ottoman Empire and resulted in Russia expanding its border and influence in Ottoman territories. Cyprus was leased to the British Empire after the end of the Russo-Turkish war in 1878 and seized by Britain at the end of World War I. However, throughout the time of Ottoman domination, there existed a notion known as’ enosis, ‘which represented a unity with Greece and was held by many Greek Cypriots.

On April 1, 1955, this notion became a military goal, resulting in the launch of the Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston guerilla operation (E.O.K.A.). Their main goal was to unite Greece through war with the British. This battle lasted four years, until a cease-fire was negotiated in August 1960, and Cyprus gained independence as a result of the London-ZΓΌrich Agreement, signed by the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Greece. The Republic of Cyprus was established on August 16, 1960. Cyprus made its independence day a national holiday in 1979, 19 years after gaining independence from British domination.
