📜 History of Day after New Year’s Day

The earliest known new year celebration in ancient Babylon occurred in the year 2000 B.C. The calendar of the Babylonians was based on the movement of the moon and sun. Their new year is celebrated in the month of Nisan, the first new moon following the spring equinox (mid-March in the Gregorian calendar). Prior to the ancient Roman calendar reformation in Numa’s period, the Romans used the ten-month calendar claimed to have been founded by Romulus, Rome’s first ruler.

March was the first month on the calendar. As a result, the new year’s festivities were held on March 1. January and February were later added to the Roman calendar as the final two months. However, after a while, people came to see them as the first two months of the year. By 153 B.C., the Romans had begun to celebrate the new year on January 1.

After being appointed Consul and observing the negative impact of the Roman calendar on state management, Julius Caesar introduced new calendar changes. He changed the calendar to reflect the movement of the sun and designated January the first month of the year. For the following 1,600 years, much of the Western world followed the calendar, and many of them celebrated the new year on January 1.

During the Middle Ages, the Church temporarily substituted key religious holidays for the first day of the year, such as the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25 and Jesus’ birthday on December 25. This stopped happening when Pope Gregory XIII put in place the Gregorian calendar in 1582, making January 1 the new New Year’s Day.
