On this day in 1976, a right-wing military administration took over the country’s governance, suppressing all kinds of genuine and perceived dissent and harming its population. 📜 History of Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice

Throughout their reign, the military was involved in several violent acts of repression against more liberal individuals. Socialists, journalists, artists, students, and other political organizations were all punished as a danger to the governing regime. They outlawed books, music, films, plays, and publications that they deemed a threat to their reign. Households that opposed the order found their children taken away and raised by military-affiliated families. Official figures place the number of missing at 30,000, although alternative estimates place the figure far higher. It’s hard to get these numbers because at the time, the military government destroyed all records.

Seven terrible years later, Argentina conducted a democratic election, and the Dirty War came to an end. However, the anguish of the lost children persisted, prompting the formation of the Mothers and Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, or Las Madres y Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo. This organization, made up of family members of numerous war casualties, was vocal in their quest for justice for their loved ones. While the new administration made some moves toward justice, the trials and sentencing of military commanders generated instability in a country already torn by civil conflict. As a result, government efforts fell short, and many criminals went unpunished. The Plaza de Mayo Mothers and Grandmothers found this intolerable and increased their efforts to obtain justice for the missing. They marched through the streets in protest, wearing headscarves embroidered with the names of loved ones lost in the conflict. In 2006, the government of Argentina set aside a special day to remember these people who died. This day is still remembered today.
