📜 History of Day of Respect For Cultural Diversity

Columbus, as is generally known, first set foot in the Americas on October 12, 1492. He arrived on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas while looking for a maritime passage to India. His transatlantic journeys fueled European exploration and colonization of a wide range of areas. Still, he was not the first European explorer to go to the Americas. Norsemen had been to the North American peninsula hundreds of years before Columbus.

Argentina honored the day for the first time in 1917; Chile in 1922; Colombia and Venezuela in 1921; and Mexico in 1928; while the origins of the day can be traced back to 1914, when Spanish minister Faustino Rodrguez-San Pedro established the “Feast of the Race.” This notion is now considered erroneous and demeaning to indigenous groups, which prompted the name change. As a result, the Day of Cultural Diversity continues to exist.
