📜 History of Declaration of Malacca as a Historical City
People produced products like sugarcane, bananas, and yams in the new capital, which thrived. A hill sheltered the harbor nicely. Taking advantage of this, “Parameswara” constructed a port to foster trade and serve as a common location for exchanging commodities and freight. The story of thriving trade quickly spread to other regions of the world. The “Yongle Emperor” of China dispatched a convoy to Malacca in order to establish economic relations between China and Malacca. ‘Parameswara’ and his family traveled to China to see the Emperor in 1411. “Parameswara” was given silk and a yellow umbrella, both of which represented royalty.
In 1511, the Portuguese admiral ‘Alfonso de Albuquerque’ landed on the coasts of Malacca with 1,200 troops and gained control of the city. The Portuguese had gained dominance in world trade. The Dutch launched a series of invasions against Portuguese-occupied Malacca later in the sixteenth century. With the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, Malacca became a part of the United Kingdom. Malacca was admitted to the Malayan Union in 1946. Malacca was designated a historical city on April 15, 1989.
