📜 History of Dev Deepawali

The festivities continue for another 15 days, as Deepawali follows. It is also known as’ Kartik Purnima ‘,’ or the Diwali of the Gods. The ghats of Varanasi must be visited to appreciate the festival’s peacefulness. Thousands of bulbs illuminate the stairs, their light reflected in the glistening waters of the river. All around us there is hymn chanting, conch shell blowing, and rhythmic drum banging. It’s difficult not to sense the presence of heavenly powers. Thousands of worshipers bathe in the Ganges’ sacred waters. Bathing in the water is said to wash away sins, bringing you closer to the gods.

Dev Deepawali commemorates Lord Shiva, who conquered and destroyed three terrible demons known as Tripurasura: Vidyunmali, Tarakaksha, and Viryavana. Such an accomplishment deserved a celestial celebration, which is why the gods themselves celebrate Shiva’s victory each year. It’s natural that the festivities take place in Varanasi, which has long been revered as the city of Lord Shiva.
