William Banting, an Englishman, published “A Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public.” in 1863. Banting promoted his interpretation of a healthy diet, which became known as “Banting.” This diet includes four meals each day of meat, greens, fruits, and dry wine. William Banting wanted to develop the no-carb diet that we are all acquainted with today. Sugar, flour, alcohol, milk, and butter were all off the menu. This booklet was current and relevant for many years after William Banting’s death. His diet has also influenced modern diets. Banting gained popularity as a result of a smart advertising gimmick in the shape of a question on the leaflet that said, “Do you bant?” This slogan helped to publicize the diet regimen.
Lulu Hunt Peters published “Diet and Health: With a Key to the Calories” in 1918. This was the first weight-loss book to become a best-seller. It was also the first weight-loss book to advocate calorie counting.
By 2014, it was projected that over 1,000 weight-loss regimens had been produced.
