📜 History of Doctor’s Day (India)

On July 1, Doctor’s Day is celebrated across all of India in memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a renowned doctor and West Bengal’s second Chief Minister. He was the oldest of five siblings and was born in Patna in 1882. Dr. Roy got his medical training in India. After that, he went to the Calcutta Medical College for a year before leaving for more schooling.

At one point in his life, Dr. Roy even developed a strong relationship with Mahatma Gandhi during the battle for freedom. He traveled to visit Gandhi while fasting, according to a well-known account. Because the medication was not created in India, he refused to use it. Dr. Roy replied when he heard Gandhi decline medical attention in support of his countrymen, saying that he should treat someone who had zealously stood up for his nation’s 400 million people. Gandhi maintained his battle for social justice after taking medication.

Affordable healthcare for all Indians was among the causes to which Dr. Roy devoted himself. In reality, he played a key role in the establishment of a number of facilities in Kolkata, including the Victoria Institution, Jadavpur TB Hospital, Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, and Chittaranjan Seva Sadan. He also founded the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children in 1926, which is regarded by many as one of his most notable accomplishments.

The Indian Medical Association decided to dedicate July 1 to Dr. Roy’s achievements and spirit because of his extraordinary life. Thus, starting in 1991, Doctor’s Day was created in India.
