Despite the fact that the photograph of her uncle was not particularly nice, she opted to display it in her room. Dorie’s actions improved her uncle’s spirits. She displayed empathy while being just seven years old. Every time Dorie came to see her uncle after that, other injured soldiers were cheered by the occurrence and conducted drawing contests to determine who could create the finest bird drawings. Within a few months, the whole ward’s walls were covered in bird drawings.

Dorie died in a vehicle accident three years later, and her casket was filled with bird drawings drawn by troops, medics, and physicians from the war. Draw a Bird Day is observed to show delight in the simplest things in life and to assist troops in temporarily forgetting the conflict. Dorie assisted her uncle in forgetting about the war by doing something as easy as painting birds.
