Earth Day for the year 2024 is celebrated/observed on Saturday, April 22nd. There are until the next observance.

For the past 50 years, billions of people across the world have celebrated Earth Day on April 22 to raise awareness about the health of our environment. Why should we keep celebrating this holiday? Some may see it as just another holiday or an excuse to wear green and a flower crown like St. Patrick’s Day, but with serious concerns about our changing environment being studied and addressed today by prominent scientists, politicians, and young climate change activists alike, some people are adapting to more environmentally friendly ways of life every day, not just on April 22 every year. To conserve the turtles, start composting, recycling, reusing, carpooling, thrifting, and using metal straws.

Countdown to Earth Day

Did you know: The National Geographic Society says that the amount of carbon dioxide in the air has never been higher. This is partly because of natural causes and partly because of the progress made in industrialization around the world since the 1700s.

📜 History of Earth Day

Today, we face identical challenges, which are, sadly, considerably worse than the original oil spill. Increasing natural disasters, harsh weather, and rising global temperatures may appear unachievable for one person, let alone millions or billions. Coral reefs are disappearing, we see photographs of animals on land and in the sea with junk in their tummies or around their bodies, and big factories and huge corporations throughout the world continue to damage our air and living places. A modest action, such as cleaning up garbage on the sidewalk that would otherwise end up around the neck of an animal or in the water, has an impact-it’s a step in the right direction and makes a significant difference.

☑️ Earth Day facts

Less food waste means less greenhouse gas
Many people are unaware that the more food we waste and do not consume, the more greenhouse gases are generated in order to transport and biodegrade the garbage.

Climate change effects temperatures and weather
According to the United States Global Change Research Program, the temperature in the United States has risen by 2 degrees in the previous 50 years, while precipitation has risen by 5%. More extreme weather events have occurred in the last 50 years. Extreme weather in 2019 broke over 120,000 records in the United States.

It’s a politically debated topic
Despite the fact that 97 percent or more of climate scientists agree that climate change is most likely caused by human activity (according to the Earth Day Network) and nearly 200 scientific organizations worldwide have issued statements supporting this viewpoint, it remains a hotly debated topic in 2020.

Things to do on Earth Day

Reduce your carbon footprint
Try new methods to change up your commute or a component of your daily routine. Instead of driving, carpool with friends, use public transit, or walk, skate, scooter, or ride a bike to your location. Depending on the weather, you might prefer this new mode of transportation to waiting in traffic.

Reuse, and recycle your wardrobe
Though it may appear trivial in the great scheme of things, your closet and shopping habits can truly harm the environment. When you buy thrifted or lightly worn clothing online, no fresh resources are utilized to manufacture additional garments that will eventually be recycled, reused, or thrown away. According to some research, online shopping is healthier for the environment because it uses roughly 30% fewer resources to sell products online. Launch the Amazon Prime app!

Switch up your diet
Most people are aware that food production contributes to one-quarter to one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions globally, with the meat sector bearing the most of the responsibility. According to the BBC, if the entire globe went vegetarian and stopped eating red meat by 2050, food-related emissions would be reduced by around 60%. Instead, being vegan would reduce emissions by almost 70%. Perhaps it’s time to test the new ‘Beyond Meat’ burgers.
