A month later, he successfully manufactured the official chocolate-coated ice cream bar, dubbed the “I-Scream Bar.”

Nelson began by making 500 bars without the sticks and selling them at a firefighter’s picnic. Nelson began looking for a manufacturer to take his business to the next level after successfully selling his first few batches. He collaborated with chocolate producer Russel C. Stover, renaming the ice cream bars Eskimo Pies. Nelson and Stover eventually sold the rights to their neighborhood ice cream shops.

By the spring of 1922, about 2,700 separate stores offered the Eskimo Pie, with sales exceeding a million per day. Ice cream bars were at their zenith of popularity in 1934. Sticks were subsequently incorporated to make the pies simpler to consume, transforming them into the contemporary variety we know and love today. Nelson stopped working in 1961 and died on March 8, 1992. He left behind a legacy that changed the ice cream business around the world for good.
