Erev Pesach (Israel) for the year 2024 is celebrated/observed on Wednesday, April 5th. There are until the next observance.

Erev Pesach, or simply “the Passover ritual,” is an Israeli national holiday honoring the Passover, a commemoration of an event that occurred in Biblical Israel. It is observed this year on April 5. It is usually assumed to have arisen from a rite that predates the real Passover rituals. To assure the security of a family home during the period, an apotropaic ceremony was performed in which the blood of a killed sheep was spread on the lintels and doorposts to ward off evil spirits. The Passover, the purpose for the celebration, came to life in ancient Egypt prior to the Exodus when God directed the Israelites to spread lamb’s blood on their lintels and doorposts to spare them from the ensuing slaughter of all firstborns.

📜 History of Erev Pesach (Israel)

In preparation for the last plague, Yahweh instructed Moses to have the Israelites mark a lamb’s blood above their doors so that they would be passed over when the wave of death passed by. According to the Bible, all leavening must be disposed of before the beginning of the 15th of Nisan. Simultaneously, on the 10th Nisan, a spotless lamb or goat, known as the “Korban Pesach” or “Paschal Lamb,” shall be laid aside. Then, when the 14th of Nisan comes to a conclusion, it should be slain at dark in preparation for the 15th of Nisan, when it will be consumed after being roasted. We must consume all components of the sacrifice before daylight on the 15th of Nisan. If there is anything left over by daylight, it must be burned.

In Egypt, the scriptural requirements for murdering the Paschal lamb in individual Hebrew households and spreading the blood of the lamb on doorposts and lintels were observed. However, after the Israelites were in the desert and had built a tabernacle, they altered those conditions. As opposed to the Jews’ houses, the Passover lambs were now sacrificed at the door of the tabernacle. As a result, spreading blood on entrances was abandoned.
