The purpose of the day is to encourage connection and friendship among community members. Individualism, loneliness, and retreat all appeared to be on the rise. European Neighbors’ Day urges people to come together and get to know their neighbors in order to strengthen community relationships. Despite its name, “European Neighbors’ Day” is observed all over the world. It has even crossed European boundaries as its popularity has grown. There are 1,450 partner cities involved; housing organizations and groups from over 49 nations are active; and there have been over 30 million participants.

📜 History of European Neighbors’ Day
The “Paris d’Amis” Association and Atanase Périfan introduced “Immeubles en Fête,” or Neighbors Day, in 1999. The objectives were to increase local relationships, foster a feeling of community among communities, foster proximity among neighborhoods, and combat exclusion and loneliness. Participating were more than 10,000 people from 800 residential blocks. The next year, 500,000 people showed up for the neighborhood festivities, thanks to the Association of French Mayors and the Union Sociale pour l’Habitat.
In 2003, Neighbors Day was able to mobilize three million Europeans, mostly in Brussels, France, and Belgium. European Neighbors’ Day was formally established in 2004. Over 3,000,000 people in France were among the 3,500,000 participants who joined the launch throughout Europe. Over 14 million individuals staged events in over 1,400 places throughout Europe and beyond in 2012.
