When Fancy Rat and Mouse Day initially began in 1983, the American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association (A.F.R.M.A.) picked November 12 as the date. The American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association (A.F.R.M.A.) is a California-based non-profit rodent group. The primary purpose of the organization is to encourage and support fancy rat and mouse breeding and presentation for exhibitions and as pets. A.F.R.M.A. has established judging criteria for competitive shows, just as it has for dogs and cats. The event features honors and prizes in a variety of categories, as well as visitors from all around the world.

The American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association is open to anybody with an interest in rats or mice (A.F.R.M.A.).
