In reaction to national liberation struggles, the country gained independence in 1980. Father Lini was elected party leader and sworn in as Vanuatu’s first prime minister on July 30, 1980. He picked the name Vanuatu because it signifies “our land forever.” Father Lini served there until 1991, when he died in 1999.
