📜 History of Feast of the Annunciation

The Feast of the Annunciation is observed every year on March 25 in the Roman Catholic Church, unless the date falls within the Easter Triduum—Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday—in which case the feast is moved to the most appropriate day during Easter. However, even if it falls within Easter, the date is never changed in Eastern Orthodoxy and Eastern Catholicism. Kyriopascha is the name given when Easter and the Feast of the Annunciation both coincide on the same day.

The Annunciation is described in the Bible in the Book of Luke, Chapter 1, verses 26–38. The angel Gabriel was dispatched to meet Mary, a virgin in Nazareth, Galilee, according to the Bible. At the time, Mary was engaged to a guy called Joseph.

The angel Gabriel greeted Mary and encouraged her not to be afraid since she had found God’s mercy. He promised her she would give birth to God’s son. He promised her that the Holy Spirit would come upon her when she answered that she was a virgin. He also told her that her barren relative, Elizabeth, would bear a son even in her old age. “Be it done to me according to your word.” Mary replied. Later, as stated in Matthew 1:18, Joseph experienced an annunciation.

The Annunciation Feast remembers how God came into the world of people when Jesus and Mary were ready to do what God told them to do.
