📜 History of Fiddler’s Frolic

Lira quickly grew popular and traveled westward to Europe, to the point where European writers used the terms “violin” and “lira” interchangeably when referring to bowed musical instruments in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. After migrating to Europe, the violin expanded to the rest of the world, particularly the United States. By the mid-1600s, black fiddlers were performing for black and white dancers on the streets of New Amsterdam and New York City. This trend kept going, and by 1690, slave fiddlers were playing at plantation balls in Virginia.
With so many individuals taking up fiddling throughout the years, it was only a matter of time until a festival or competition was organized. Fiddler’s Frolics was founded in 1971 to celebrate and compete in fiddling. Texas has been the competition’s home since its inception, with contestants and supporters traveling from all over the country to celebrate.
