πŸ“œ History of Foreign Slovaks Day

Byzantine Christian scholars and missionaries Cyril and Methodius were brothers. They are also known as “Apostles of the Slavs” for their work evangelizing Slavs. The brothers started the work that made them famous in 862. Prince Rostislav of Great Moravia petitioned Patriarch Photius and Emperor Michael III to send missionaries to convert his Slavic subjects in the same year. They moved to Great Moravia to promote it, and later, in 863, they started the process of translating the Gospels and the essential liturgical texts into what is now known as Old Slavonic. The brothers have achieved a great deal of success in this area. They created the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet used for Slavic texts, specifically for this purpose. Glagolitic was a language that matched the quirks of Slavic dialects. Many languages still use Cyrillic, his descendant script.

The first Slavic Civil Code used in Great Moravia was written by the brothers. Several Orthodox churches as well as several Eastern Catholic churches still utilize the Old Slavonic language, sometimes referred to as “Church Slavonic,” in their liturgies. There is no way to tell what the brothers interpreted. The New Testament and the Psalms appear to have come first, then the rest of the Old Testament commandments.

The Slovak Parliament created Foreign Slovaks Day in 2000, which was also the year when a memorial stone for Slovak emigration was laid in Bratislava.
