📜 History of Foundation of Quito Day
The years after Quito’s establishment saw great expansion and wealth, but also far too much violence and war. Many revolts against Spanish control have been launched throughout the years, and many have failed when Spanish soldiers attempted to quiet the revolters using less-than-peaceful tactics. After almost 300 years under Spanish domination, Quito and the neighboring territories earned freedom in 1810 after a series of hard-fought conflicts. Despite Ecuador’s independence from Spain, the difficulties and bloodshed associated with government and civil strife persisted. As more rebel groups popped up in the country over the next hundred years, religious and political leaders were killed.
People rose up against the tyranny of the then-president, Ignacio de Veintimilla, near the conclusion of the 18th century, in 1882. A year later, Eloy Alfaro took office as president, and the country found itself under the rule of another tyrant. Ecuador ceased to be at war in 1912, when Alfaro was caught and slain.
Despite its turbulent history, Quito is a thriving and prospering city with a rich history and culture that will intrigue both locals and international visitors. The Foundation of Quito Day festivities are defined by fun, enthusiasm, and levity.
