๐Ÿ“œ History of Founding Anniversary of the Senate

Around 777,000 years ago, the first people arrived in the Philippine Islands. The slaughtered bones of animals such as rhinoceroses discovered in Rizal and Kalinga are vital archeological evidence that assisted the study team in determining the Philippines’ prehistory. By the 12th century, the island’s culture and economy had grown enormously, and a huge number of coastal villages and trading hubs had arisen. The advent of Spanish explorer Miguel Lรณpez de Legazpi from Mexico formally began colonization in 1565, and the country was temporarily held by Britain between 1762 and 1764. In 1898, the Spanish-American War began, and the Philippines declared independence from Spain. The next year, on January 21, the First Philippine Republic was formed. It lasted until the Americans slowly got rid of it.

On August 29, 1916, the Americans passed the Philippine Autonomy Act, establishing an elected bicameral Philippine legislature with the Senate as the upper body. The statute, generally known as the Jones Law, served as the nation’s constitution until 1934. The Jones Law also included principles for establishing a fully elected and stable government in the Philippines to replace American control and assist the island in becoming a free republic. The Senate was briefly suspended in 1935 before being reinstated in 1941.
