📜 History of Genocide Prevention Day

Lemkin later set out to establish a term to describe Nazi atrocities against European Jews during WWII. To prohibit and punish violence against the innocent, he integrated the word into international law. In 1944, Lemkin coined the term “genocide,” combining the Greek word “genos,” which means “race” or “tribe,” with the Latin suffix “cide,” which means “to slaughter.”

In Australia, Genocide Prevention Day was established to raise awareness of the Genocide Convention (Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide). The Genocide Convention is a set of articles that spell out how to avoid genocide and what to do if a country is on the verge of becoming a victim of genocide. The treaty was approved by the United Nations in 1948.

In 1948, the United Nations declared genocide to be an international crime; the term would later be used to describe atrocities committed during wars in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda in Africa in the 1990s.

Understanding the causes of genocide and genocidal wars is critical to their prevention. The basis of genocidal conflict is identity. Genocide is more likely to happen in places where people of different races, nationalities, ethnicities, and religions are fighting for their own identities.

The first step in averting genocide is to identify the characteristics (discriminatory practices) that lead to a group’s violent treatment. The second stage is researching solutions for reducing and eliminating these contributing elements. Because no country is totally homogenous, genocide is a worldwide issue.
