📜 History of Global Youth Service Days
In the United States, these days used to be National Youth Service Days. They honor the work of young volunteers from all over the world who have given their time and skills to helping their communities.
Youth volunteering may be traced back to ancient times, when Greek and Persian armies recruited young men eager and able to join their forces. Joining the army to defend their states from foreign invasion was regarded as a higher kind of community duty than any other type of public service at the time. During the Industrial Revolution, when children and teens were compelled to work in the fields, officials referred to it as “a great service” to the nation (though “forced labor” taken in its right context is now considered a human rights violation).
Although child labor is now illegal in many countries, it is considered a moral obligation to assist society in whatever manner one can.
To that end, Global Youth Service Days is a three-day event in which young leaders aged five to 25 take center stage as community service providers, drawing attention to the need for young people to commit some time to serving their communities. This societal phenomenon has spread to over a hundred nations in recent years, preparing the youth to take over when necessary.
