📜 History of Gobstopper Day
The gobstopper may be traced back to ancient Egypt, when sweets were made using natural ingredients such as fruits, nuts, and spices. By the 1500s, sweets production had begun on a modest scale, with all goods being made by hand. But in the 1700s, equipment was being used in larger-scale confectionery firms to develop more intriguing and unusual sweets, such as the gobstopper.
Gobstoppers are made by adding layers of sugar syrup to a core, which could be a ball of sugar that has been squeezed or a gumball. This process is repeated several times, which takes a few weeks.
For at least a century, gobstoppers have been sold in traditional candy shops, frequently by the weight of jars. Gobstoppers were popular candies in the United Kingdom and the Americas between World Wars I and II.
The term was adopted by Roald Dahl in his 1964 book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” when he developed the Everlasting Gobstopper, which was initially made by Breaker Confections before being bought by Nestlé.
Nestlé’s Willy Wonka Candy Company brand was used to sell Everlasting Gobstoppers. Breaker Confections initially debuted it in 1976.
