📜 History of Hamster Day
Syrian hamsters were thought to be extinct until a mother hamster with her pups was discovered in 1930. Biologist Israel Aharoni made the finding while on a search for Syrian hamsters near the old city of Aleppo. He’d heard rumors of a “golden hamster,” so he set out to find out more about it.
Though Aharoni disliked travel, he thought the hamster species needed to be discovered. Aharoni spotted a litter of Syrian hamsters after days of searching with a local hunter. While the critters were being held, the crew saw that the wild mother hamster started eating her brood. What’s the reason? It’s a terrifying feature of the innocent pet’s personality. The motherless newborn hamsters were bred into the colony, and the rest is history! All of the golden hamsters kept as pets in the United Kingdom and the United States are now related to the one Israel Aharoni brought back to the United States in 1930.
