📜 History of Holocaust Memorial Day

The living conditions in these ghettos were horrible, and the Nazis intended to murder hundreds of thousands of Jews. This tactic was used in other Nazi-occupied nations throughout Eastern Europe.

The Holocaust against Europe’s Jews began as part of the Nazis’ “Final Remedy to the Jewish Problem.” The Einsatzgruppen and other extermination squads moved over Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, publicly executing Jews. The first eradication camp, Chelmno in Poland, had been constructed by the end of 1941, providing the Nazis with a mechanism to conduct mass executions.

The day recalls the death of about six million Jews, as well as millions of others, by the Nazi government and its contemporaries. The United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 60/7 on November 1, 2005. The request was made during a special session held on January 24, that year, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration camps, which was the last act of the Holocaust.

Holocaust Memorial Days have been established in several nations. Some, like Holocaust Memorial Day in the United Kingdom, are held on January 27. Others, like Israel’s Yom HaShoah, are held at different times of the year.

Every year, thousands of people meet around the United Kingdom to learn more about the past and to take steps to guarantee a safer future. They gain more knowledge, sympathize more, and accept greater responsibility. On Holocaust Memorial Day, we stand in solidarity with all who have been victims of genocide; we celebrate survivors and all those whose lives have been transformed beyond recognition.
