📜 History of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day

By two further treaties, the U.K. gained sovereignty over Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. Thus, British Hong Kong became a dependent colony of the British Empire throughout the colonial era from 1841 to 1997, with the exception of the years from 1941 to 1945 when Japan occupied the region.

After a lot of talking, the British and the Chinese agreed to give the island to the Chinese in 1984, as long as China promised to keep Hong Kong’s capitalist system.

The “one country, two systems” framework was created by negotiating that the colony would become a part of China while retaining the existing political system. This allayed concerns that the structures and liberties that give Hong Kong a capitalist, laissez-faire economy will be taken away by the handover to China.

On the evening of June 30, 1997, in Wan Chai, a handover ceremony was performed, lasting till the following morning, when the British returned Hong Kong to China. Charles, Prince of Wales, the principal British visitor, made a goodbye statement on behalf of the British Queen. Along with Jiang Zemin, the president of China, and the first chief executive of Hong Kong, Tony Blair, the newly appointed prime minister of the United Kingdom, was also there.
