📜 History of International Beaver Day

The name ‘beaver’ comes from the Old English word ‘beofor,’ which means’ brown ‘or’ bright.’ Beavers are semiaquatic rodents widespread across the temperate northern hemisphere, including Canada, Poland, Germany, France, central Russia, and southern Scandinavia. They are the world’s second-largest semi-aquatic rodents, behind capybaras. They are most commonly found in freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, streams, and ponds. Beavers have huge heads, sturdy bodies, and brown or gray fur, as well as hand-like front feet and webbed hind feet.

Beavers are keystone species, which means they have a disproportionately large impact on the ecosystem in relation to their population size. Beavers make good use of the trees they consume by using the remaining portions to create dams and lodges, as well as carry other resources such as dirt, pebbles, and garbage. Beavers almost went extinct in the 19th and early 20th centuries due to overhunting for their fur and flesh. Though there were once 60 million beavers in North America, their number has now declined to roughly 10 to 15 million.
