📜 History of International Jugglers Day

When the Middle Ages came to an end, juggling gradually regained respectability. Pierre Gringoire (1475–1538) was dubbed the “King of Jugglers,” a title that did not appear to be derogatory. In his chronicle from 1528, the Emperor of Hindustan mentioned a troop of jugglers playing with wooden rings. Christoph Weiditz painted jugglers among the Aztecs of Mexico the same year. Around 1820, the brothers Mooty and Medua Samme made their European debut. Chinese devil sticks and oriental ball manipulation were employed by these two Indian entertainers. They were so well-liked that “Far East” acts rapidly became popular.

There was a lot of miscommunication between American Indians and Asian Indians. Many Europeans muddied the waters by claiming to be from China, Japan, or India. Carl Rappo, a German performer who pretended to be an Indian and performed extraordinary movements and feats of strength with iron balls, was one such artist. One of the true Asian entertainers was the Burmese Moung-Toon, who operated solely with his feet and received “excellent praise across Europe,” The first real Japanese troupe arrived in the West in 1870, led by juggler Awata Katsnoshin, who practiced traditional Japanese ball and stick play, which gave rise to modern ball manipulation. In the mid-1980s, the International Jugglers’ Association (IJA) established International Jugglers’ Day.
