📜 History of International Louie Louie Day

On April 6, 1963, the Kingsmen recorded their legendary performance in Portland, Oregon. The Kingsmen’s recording session cost $50 and included only one take. According to legend, they thought it was a demo recording or a rehearsal. The Raiders and Paul Revere recorded a different version of “Louie Louie” in the same studio the same week. Musically, the Raiders’ version is superior, but the Kingsmen’s version was victorious. This would go on to be the song’s most popular interpretation. The microphone was placed high above vocalist Jack Ely, making his words difficult to comprehend. The errors were allowed in because it was recorded in one take. At 1:57, following the guitar solo, Ely begins to sing but abruptly quits, recognizing he entered too early. Lynn Easton conceals the inaccuracy with a drum fill.

It was first released by Jerden in May 1963, and subsequently by Wand Records in October. It peaked at number two on the Billboard charts in December and stayed for 16 weeks in the top 100. The song, however, caused discussion. Some radio stations banned it because of its occasionally ambiguous lyrics, which many thought were dirty. The FBI investigated its lyrics for 30 months. Ely’s lyrics were deemed not obscene since they were incomprehensible. Easton screams a curse after dropping his drumsticks at 0:54. The band disbanded soon after recording the single, and they weren’t compensated until the late 1990s. Ely’s sole recording with the Kingsmen He left the band soon after, maybe to return to school or because of a voice problem. The causes vary. When the song became viral, he was forbidden to return. They won a court dispute on April 10, 1998, letting them recover $200,000 in royalties and restore full rights to their Wand songs.
