📜 History of International Migrants Day

Although the day was officially declared in the year 2000, it has been observed since 1997, when numerous Asian migrant organizations designated December 18 as the day to push for the respect, rights, and protection of migrants.

Because of the ever-increasing number of migrant workers worldwide, the United Nations General Assembly established December 18 as International Migrants Day on December 4, 2000. A decade ago, the Assembly launched the International Convention on the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

On September 19, 2016, the United Nations General Assembly accepted a defined set of commitments known as the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants during the first-ever conference focusing on large-scale movements of migrants and refugees. In this proclamation, the importance of the international protection regime and the commitments of member states to improve the system for people on the move are reaffirmed.

The United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes migration-related targets. For example, access to education, for example, will lead to greater prospects and a higher quality of life.
