International Permaculture Day for the year 2024 is celebrated/observed on Sunday, May 7th. There are until the next observance.

Every year on the first Sunday in May, International Permaculture Day is observed, and this year it will be observed on May 7. It is a day to encourage individuals to adopt practices that promote productive, ecologically friendly, and largely self-sufficient households and communities. The world is ours to care for, and we should do everything we can to keep it a safe place for us to live, as the flip side of the coin has disastrous consequences. A permaculture design system is a set of ethics, design principles, qualities, and practices upon which companies, communities, and individuals may construct practical applications.

πŸ“œ History of International Permaculture Day

Mollison began working with the CSIRO (Wildlife Survey Section) in the Tasmanian rainforests in 1954, which led to Mollison developing the theories and concepts behind permaculture as a design practiceβ€”devising ways to thoughtfully develop systems that would actively sustain both humans and wildlife. In the mid-1970s, Mollison and Holmgren invented the term “permaculture” to describe an “integrated, evolving system of perennial or self-perpetuating plant and animal species useful to man.” They started the Permaculture Design System when they were living on the island state of Tasmania at the end of the 1970s.

Bill Mollison of the University of Tasmania met David Holmgren, a landscape design student at the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education. They integrated strategies from ancient traditions with current scientific understanding to establish the foundation of a way of life that was likely to be perpetuated throughout time while addressing people’s needs. Mollison’s theories found their way into institutes all around the world, notably the Permaculture Institute, which he founded in 1978 to give formal instruction in permaculture theory and practice. They spread the word about this new concept for sustainable design by releasing Permaculture One and Two. They trained a whole generation of permaculturists who committed their lives to the discipline, just like them.
