πŸ“œ History of International Stuttering Awareness Day

Stuttering has existed for as long as humans have been able to document their experiences with it, but a lack of understanding of the problem has resulted in years of harsh treatment. The Bible has passages that imply Moses stammered when he talked. Claudius, who would eventually become a Roman emperor, was first rejected and barred from public office because stuttering was thought to be a sign of stupidity.

In nineteenth-century Europe, surgery was advocated for people with speech disorders. Surgeons would use scissors to cut nerves and muscles in the neck and lips, as well as a triangular wedge from the rear of the tongue. Other surgeons practiced removing the tonsils or shortening the uvula. Patients were bleeding to death and those who lived kept stuttering, so these methods were eventually thrown out.

Though it is now recognized that stuttering is a neurological illness that can be developmental (formed as a kid) or acquired (developed as an adult as a result of trauma or drug misuse), people who live with it are nonetheless stigmatized.
