📜 History of International Zebra Day

There are now three varieties of zebra in the wild. Grévy’s zebra, plains zebra, and mountain zebra are the three species. Although the Grévy’s zebra is found in northern Kenya and is exceedingly rare, it is an endangered species that has lost more than 54% of its entire population. The decrease has been fast in the previous three decades due to poaching for zebra hides and pelts.

Zebras live in the African Savannah, where their native environment has been largely protected, and not all zebras are at risk of extinction. The other two zebra subspecies are less threatened than the Grevy’s zebra. Plains zebras are prospering and are not under threat of extinction. Mountain zebras may be found in South Africa, Angola, and Namibia. Along with the perils of poaching, these zebras face threats from people who may hunt them for meat when times are tight. Many people are concerned about the survival of the zebra population.
