📜 History of James Ronald Webster Day
When he went to Anguilla in 1960, he saw that the island was still a century behind its neighbors and that its inhabitants were in distress. He was resolved to do something about it with the money he had inherited. He contacted Robert Bradshaw, who lived on Saint Kitts, then known as Saint Christopher, in 1966. Webster volunteered to pay for a power plant and road upgrades in Anguilla. Webster sought to meet Bradshaw twice after being awarded a license to run a power plant, but was turned down each time.
Anguilla was part of a federation at the time, along with Saint Kitts and Nevis. Webster was so outraged by the federation’s treatment of Anguilla that he went on to play a key part in the Anguilla Revolution and the federation’s collapse. From February 1976 to February 1977, and again from May 1980 to March 1984, he served as Chief Minister of the island territory. In 2010, the government of Anguilla designated Webster’s birthday a national holiday in recognition of his role in spearheading the island’s independence from the Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla federation. Webster died on December 6, 2016, at the age of 90.
