📜 History of Kiss a Shark Week

Sharks are fundamentally older than dinosaurs, which appeared barely 200 million years ago! The recreated shark does not look like any shark we are familiar with, yet many historians think it is the ancestor of the contemporary shark species.

Shark fossils dating back 380 million years reveal that sharks back then are nearly identical to certain current shark species. Except during the dinosaur era, when the shark took a back seat, these gigantic predators have always been at the top of the food chain.

Sharks are now on the verge of extinction due to five global extinction events. This is largely due to our overexploitation of the oceans, which has depleted a natural resource. One reason why this holiday was made was to teach people about sharks, keep them safe, and protect them.
